Rangitaiki River 23 January 2021

Submitted by Dave on

Ok, so I have a client tomorrow (25 January). I needed to have a look at the river since I have not been on this stretch since last season. You really need to know about potential hazards on a river like this. It is fast and has a few rapids that could lead to trouble.

Dan was more than keen to tag along. Dan has been fishing with me for a few years now and is pretty good at edge fishing with a bugger and casting a dry in mostly still water.

He went nymphing for his first time with me a few weeks ago on a rafting trip further up the same river. Since my client wants to cast a dry fly, I thought Dan could come along while I scout the river and work on his nymphing skills. Fish are caught in very different places with these two techniques.

We have also set a goal to catch a trout on every pattern we stock and tell you about it.

So we travelled down and Dan caught trout on at least a dozen different flies.

Just note that Dan is my mate and I am allowed to pick on him. I am trying to make him all he can be.

The video tells the story of a very successful day.

My friend, Andrew, is going to have a very good day tomorrow!

Tight lines!
