Just Do It in the Bay of Plenty, NZ

Jack and I came very close to the stag this morning. We thought he was further away and it waited until we went past him. Then he bolted.

As usual, we saved the day with some fly fishing. It was a bit windy and the lake was about a metre lower than it had been in a very long time. It was still a little stained but conditions were pretty good. The first was on a Mrs Simpson Jigging smelt within a minute or two of starting. Then Jack got one on a Baby Rabbit jigging smelt. I was next on a Yellow and Black Bugger. I was sure we had ticked that one off but it was not highlighted on my list. Well that means every bugger we sell has caught a fish. Do you see the pattern here?

I had another fail with the Jack Spratt Jigging Smelt. Not a fail per se, just kept missing the strikes. Then I lost it in a tree, doh.

I imagine you know by now we were on Lake Matahina. We got to the big island in the middle and I told Jack the story about the deer I have seen on it. Ever hopeful, I gave a couple of roars but no joy.

The wind died right off and the lake became like a mill pond. Jack had on a Black and Peacock Wee Wet and worked on perfecting his cast. We were chatting away and the rest is in the video below.

Then I tried a Dad's Favourite Wee Wet fly. Man I missed a lot of fish on it before we decided to call it a day around mid day. Until next time...
