Father and Son Fishing After a Hunt

Submitted by Dave on

Well we skipped the Easter Weekend hunting and went for another look today (Tuesday) when everyone should be back at work. We sat at the spot we found last year this time., hoping to see a deer. It is one of those spots that has several trails crossing and last year there were a couple of roaring pads there. Unfortunately, nothing was happening. After a couple of hours' waiting and a few roars, we gave up.

Then we put the rods together...

Jack had a spinner and I took the fly rod. The latest deluge of rain made the water dirty again but we found an area closer to the dam that was still clear. The last few days were extremely windy but today was perfectly calm.

For me it was time to knock off a few patterns. The epoxy eyed Parson's Glory Jigging Smelt was the first to strike silver on the edge. Then we saw a few midwater risers gently sipping bugs from the surface. The Grey Rabbit Jigging Smelt got quite a good rainbow after seeing it rise a couple of times. A large Pearl and White Jigging Smelt was next.

Jack became the camera man for a while and I must say, we had some pretty good banter going on. The Epoxy Eyed Taupo Tiger in size 4 took our first brown trout of the day. Then we went with a Jack Spratt Jigging Smelt. I missed a riser mid water then broke one off on the strike.

Then we went home.
